Achieving Free-Standing Electrode using Chitin for Zn-Ion Batteries
Abstract
As lithium-ion battery (Li-ion battery, LIB) technology has been developed, the consumption of Li is expected to increase, leading to unbalance of demand and supply. Therefore, we need to develop advanced rechargeable batteries that can replace LIB. Recently, aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been spotlighted due to eco-friendly, low-price, safe, and multivalent Zn ions. Nevertheless, up to date, a current collector for ZIBs has been rarely studied, and currently used metallic current collectors, including titanium and stainless steel, can not be practically employed because they are heavy. In this work, we developed a free-standing cathode using a chitin binder for ZIBs. We fabricated the free-standing cathode by utilizing conventional coating and spin coating methods, comparing them regarding materials property and electrochemical battery performance. We confirmed that the spin coating method enabled the electrode to be homogeneous, enhancing ZIB cell performance.
