An Ionic Conjugated Polymer via the Quaternization Polymerization of 2-Ethynylpyridine Using Trimellitic Anhydride Chloride: Synthesis and Properties
Abstract
A new ionic polyacetylene with a trimelitic moiety as a side chain was synthesized in high yield via the polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using trimellitic anhydride chloride without any additional catalyst in 1:1 molar ratio. The activated acetylenic triple bond of monomeric N-substituted-2-ethynylpyridinium salts, formed at first reaction step, proceeds with linear polymerization to give the corresponding polymers. The instrumental analysis results on the chemical structure of the resulting polymer using analysis equipment such as NMR, IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies, confirmed that a conjugated polymer with designed substituent was synthesized. The electro-optical and electrochemical properties of polymer were measured and duscussed. PETAPC showed a broad absorption peak in the visible region up to 500 nm as well as ultraviolet region. PL maximum value of polymer was 539 nm.
